Voodoo Healers visit Mitrovica and make donation to the Rock School

Three weeks ago, the Rock School received a EUR 150 donation from Greek punk rock band Voodoo Healers. The Voodoo Healers were visiting Mitrovica to meet up with other musicians, and liked the project so much that they decided to support it.

The Mitrovica Rock School will use the donation to buy much needed instruments. Thanks for the support, guys! Rock on!

Miloš to do a Rock School internship

Next April, Miloš Kabašić (16) will start a 4-month internship at the Rock School. Miloš applied for the internship under the SKYL (Support Kosovo's Young Leaders) program. Part of the 2008 Summer School group, Miloš is already one of the school's most active students, playing in three bands (The Cold Shots, DODz and Guz Brothers) and practising at the Rock School five days a week.

SKYL targets youth from 16 to 26. The program delivers a series of trainings in modern life skills (Negotiation, Communication and Leadership), job skills and civic engagements. The trainings are followed by the 2-month and 4-month internships and apprenticeships in private, public and business sectors. In addition, SKYL supports young people in designing and implementing up to 7 small projects per year.

Miloš will be working as the school reporter, taking pictures and writing reports for the blog. He will also be updating the Rock School's MySpace page and other websites, and will help the staff of the North Mitrovica Rock School branch maintain the school and the instruments.

Anniversary concert big success -- Summer School team reunited

The MwB ten-year anniversary concert yesterday was a big success. An audience of over 200 heard top musicians involved in all MwB projects perform everything from popular Balkan ballades to Janis Joplin.

The Summer School team from the Rock Academy got together again to bring the house down with a rocking rendition of "Me and Bobby McGee," inspiring plans for a Janis Joplin tribute band. I've posted three videos of Rock Academy's performance on the Mitrovica Rock School YouTube channel. Apologies for the shakiness -- the camera woman was enjoying herself!

MwB has allocated the proceeds of the ticket sales to the Mitrovica Rock School. In addition, concert visitors donated a total of € 709.15 to the project, to which our friends at IFOR, with whom we share an office, added another € 100. All these contributions are eligible for a matching grant from NCDO, the Dutch National Committee for International Cooperation and Sustainable Development.

Proceeds for the Mitrovica Rock School
The proceeds of this concert will be donated to the Mitrovica Rock School. On both sides of the divided city of Mitrovica in Kosovo, over 70 young people receive rock music lessons from local musicians, under the guidance of the Fontys Rock Academy (Tilburg). A cooperative initiative of Musicians without Borders, Community Building Mitrovica, the Fontys Rock Academy and IKV Pax Christi, the Rock School offers young musicians a place where they are defined by their talent, creativity and musical skills, not their ethnicity or political views.

If you are unable to attend the concert but would nevertheless like to support this unique project, please transfer your contribution to bank account number 8114842, for the attention of Musicians without Borders (Alkmaar), quoting "Mitrovica Rock School" as a reference.

The Mitrovica Rock School is supported by NCDO, Wilde Ganzen, IKV Pax Christi, Stichting K.O.O.K., Lion's Club Heerhugowaard and the Robert Bosch Stiftung.

K.O.O.K. Foundation to support the Mitrovica Rock School

K.O.O.K., an organization established in MwB’s home town Alkmaar, has decided to support the Mitrovica Rock School by donating its proceeds for the month of September to the project.

With a staff of around 40 volunteers, K.O.O.K. runs a store specializing in second-hand and recycled goods, ranging from kitchenware to clothing to furniture. It donates up to 90% of its proceeds to projects in developing countries.

MwB is extremely greatful for this generous donation, which comes at a crucial point in the project. After a highly successful start, the partner organizations and Rock School staff are now working hard towards the next step: developing a long-term educational structure and sustaining the relationship between the Dutch partners and teachers and students in Mitrovica. K.O.O.K.’s contribution will go a long way to help build on our successes and move on to the next stage.
